Why we use Structural Hold Downs during your new home build in brigantine

Keeping Your Home Safe & Sound

Structural Safety During Your Coastal Home Build - The Things You Don't See

When you look at a finished home in Brigantine, you see the siding, the windows, and the trim. But when you build on a barrier island, the most important parts of the home are often the ones you can no longer see.

One of the critical components in our framing system is something called a structural hold-down.

At McHugh Builders, we don’t just design for sunny days at the beach; we design for the nor’easters and tropical storms that inevitably roll through. Here is why structural hold-downs are a standard part of our framing process and why they matter for the longevity of your home.

What Is A Structural Hold-Down?

In standard construction, walls are nailed to the floor. But in high-wind zones like the Jersey Shore, nails alone aren’t always enough.

A structural hold-down is a heavy-duty steel connector—a thick metal bracket—that bolts the vertical wood framing of your home directly to the concrete foundation or the structural pilings below.

Think of it as a seatbelt for your house. It physically anchors the wood skeleton of the building to the ground.

Protecting Against Wind

You may ask, why do we need this heavy-duty hardware? Well it comes down to physics.

During a severe storm, wind doesn’t just push against a house, it also tries to lift the roof and walls upwards which is something called uplift. Without proper anchoring, these forces can separate the wood framing from the foundation, causing major structural failure.

By installing these heavy-duty hold-downs at key stress points, we create a “Continuous Load Path. This means the force of the wind hitting the roof is transferred down through the walls, into the hold-downs, and safely dissipated into the concrete foundation. It keeps the walls square, the structure rigid, and the home secure.

The McHugh Standard - Quality You Can't See

Building codes establish the minimum requirements for safety, but we believe coastal homes require a higher standard of care.

Additionally, as any good builder, we follow any engineered plans with precision, and installing hold-downs exactly where the structural engineer dictates—even when in tricky corners or complex wall sections. Installing these hold-downs is just common sense as its affordable, and helps ensure the homes we build last a life-time!

Our approach around prioritizing the “invisible” details is deeply rooted in how we approach our custom homes.

It is the same reason we mount electrical meters on PVC blocks instead of siding. Whether it is protecting your exterior from water intrusion or anchoring your walls against hurricane-force winds, we believe the parts of the home you don’t see are just as important as the finishes you do.

Once the drywall goes up, you will never see these steel connectors again. But when the wind starts howling outside, you will have the peace of mind knowing they are there, holding strong.
